Perfecting Your Golf Swing: Part 2, Advanced Techniques

Take Your Swing to the Next Level with These Pro Tips

In Part 1 of our series, we covered the fundamentals of a great golf swing—grip, stance, and posture. Now, let's build on that foundation with advanced techniques designed to add power, consistency, and precision to your game.

By incorporating these next-level swing mechanics, you'll be on your way to hitting longer, straighter, and more controlled shots on the course.

1. Mastering the Backswing for Maximum Power

The backswing sets the stage for a powerful downswing. A poor backswing can lead to a lack of distance, off-plane swings, or inconsistent contact.

✔️ Proper Rotation, Not Just Arm Movement
Many amateur golfers rely too much on their arms and not enough on their torso rotation. Instead, think of your backswing as a coil—your shoulders should turn against a stable lower body.

💡 Drill: The Shoulder Coil Drill

  • Hold a club across your shoulders and take your normal stance.
  • Rotate your shoulders without swaying your lower body.
  • You should feel a stretch in your core and back—this is the power stored for your downswing.

✔️ Backswing Tempo Matters
A slow, controlled backswing leads to better timing and rhythm in the downswing. Rushing the backswing can throw off your balance and sequencing.

2. Generating Speed with an Efficient Downswing

The downswing is where the real magic happens—it's when the stored energy from your backswing gets transferred to the ball.

✔️ Start from the Ground Up

  • A good downswing starts with the legs, not the upper body.
  • Your lead hip should initiate movement, followed by your torso, arms, and hands.

💡 Drill: The Pump Drill

  • Take your club to the top of your backswing.
  • Start shifting your weight forward without releasing the club.
  • Repeat this motion 3-4 times before fully following through.

This drill helps reinforce the idea that the downswing begins with lower body movement, preventing the dreaded over-the-top motion that causes slices.

✔️ Maintain Lag for Maximum Clubhead Speed
"Lag" refers to the angle between your lead arm and the clubshaft in the downswing. Keeping this angle longer before release increases clubhead speed at impact.

💡 Drill: Towel Under the Trail Arm

  • Place a towel under your trailing armpit (right arm for right-handed golfers).
  • Take full swings without letting the towel drop—this ensures a compact downswing with better lag retention.

3. Achieving a Controlled, Balanced Follow-Through

Your follow-through can reveal a lot about the efficiency of your swing. If you're off-balance, it means something went wrong in your sequence.

✔️ Full Weight Transfer to the Front Foot

  • At the finish position, 90% of your weight should be on your lead foot.
  • If you're falling back, it could mean you're not fully rotating or shifting weight properly.

✔️ Hold Your Finish for One Second

  • A good habit is to hold your finish position for at least a second.
  • This ensures that you're staying in balance and completing your swing fully.

Next Steps: Keep Improving with Focused Practice

Perfecting your golf swing takes repetition and consistency. Spend time on the drills above to enhance your backswing, downswing, and follow-through.
